Herzog Johann Ernst von Sachsen-Coburg (1521-1553) ließ Schloss Ehrenburg zwischen 1543 und 1547 anstelle eines aufgelösten Franziskanerklosters erbauen. Da die Anlage ohne Frondienste errichtet worden war, soll Kaiser Karl V. das Gebäude als „Ehrenburg" betitelt haben. Es wurde 1690 zur barocken Dreiflügelanlage erweitert.
