Cap Ferret is actually a narrow slip of a peninsula on the upper shores of the Bassin d'Arcachon. Much of it is forest and until the 19th century it was largely uninhabited bar for a few fishermen.. Nearby is an uncovered German bunker from the second world war. Part of a defensive Atlantic Wall built by Hitler against an Allied invasion.

Gun Battery Cap Ferret Home - France - next page To protect the entry to the Arcachon bay, the German Army built a gun battery at Cap Ferret. The battery consisted of four 105 mm. guns placed in R671 bunkers and an R636a command and control bunker for target acquisition and fire control. Also, R607 ammunition bunkers were build for the guns.

Cap Ferret is famous for its oysters, lighthouse, pine forests, beautiful beaches, and extensive cycle paths. To get to Cap Ferret, we took the 10am ferry from the Jetée Thiers in Arcachon. The ferry took us across to Jetée Bélisaire which is in the main town of Lège Cap Ferret.
