The Holden Torana LC GTR-XU1 was released in 1970 after having been developed at Holden by Harry Firth of the Holden Dealer Team and his engineers. For homologation purposes it had to be road legal, and it had to somehow skirt GM's racing ban that was in place at the time.

Increased racing speeds had compromised the Torana's disc/drum brake system, so Holden added four-wheel disc brakes to address that shortcoming. In road trim, an A9X produced 236hp, sending it down the ยผ mile in 15.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 133mph. In racing trim, the 308 churned out more than 400hp, lifting the top speed to 165mph.

The Holden LH Torana The third generation of Holden Toranas included three vehicles: the LH, LX and the UC (see timeline ). The LH was first in line built in March of 1974. It was a brand new body style slightly bigger in a four-door style option and was the first medium Australian car.

The Torana story started in the 1960s like the Nova's. General Motors-Holden had been receiving and assembling CKD kits of the Vauxhall Viva, as well as other foreign GM models like the Chevrolet Impala. GM-H decided to eliminate other GM brands from the Australian market, and so the Viva became a Holden Torana in 1967.

Since 1974, the V8 Torana had delivered four-door performance for road or race circuit, but Holden's next move was to remove two of the doors, reshape the roof and turn its grunty sedan into a sporty hatchback. Basic models were available in SL trim, with six-cylinder engines or the 4.2-litre V8.
