The coin shows Christopher Ironside's Royal Arms design (runner-up to the winning design of Britannia for the first 50p in 1969). The fifty pence piece is circulated and protected in a small plastic wallet.

Two commemorative coins: one to show the rejected runner up design that was nearly used for the original 50p and a commemorative coin to mark the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten.
